Its base sensibilities are not the mid-twelfth century, IMHO. While as a whole the book strains the bounds of credulity less of a this could be how it happened and more of a well, if this thing happened, then theoretically this could have as well I do realize that in many instances, “fiction” is the key word. It is certainly well written and a quick read.
Now, as wife to Louis VII and Queen of France, she has found herself unsatisfied with reflected glory-and feeling constantly under threat, even though she outranks every woman in Paris. I had high hopes for The Secret Eleanor. Employing deception and disguise, seduction and manipulation, Eleanor is determined to find her way to power-and make her mark on history. The side story of the lady in waiting, Claire, who we never knew if we could trust, was a positive departure from the norm in the novel, as we grew to empathize with Claire and her own plight in the world. Unfortunately, I found this description of Eleanor to be lacking in depth and it was quite hard to derive any pleasing qualities from her demeanor.

I also love Eleanor’s story, how she really took things into her own hands when that was so uncommon for women at that time. It opens aquotania to Eleanor as a Queen of France, struggling to find a way out of there as Louis’ queen and directly on to Poitiers and her beloved home of Aquitaine. I mention all this because I am trying to figure out why I really didn’t like “The Secret Eleanor” very much.
This is a timely book. Queen Eleanor wife of King Henry11 was a formidable woman for those times.
I’m not going to go into a synopsis here because lots of other people on Good Reads have done a great job of that. The Secret Eleanor opens up to Eleanor in the French courts as she first eyes the must-be-extremely-sexy Henry, future king of England.
